The Ethics of Secondary Trauma and Compassion Fatigue in Clinical Supervision

We will discuss the ethical implications of secondary trauma and compassion fatigue. Supervisors will be able to recognize and address secondary trauma and compassion fatigue in themselves and their supervisees. We will discuss the roles and expectations of helping professionals and the part they play in putting clinicians at risk, and identify tools that supervisors can use to help supervisees prevent compassion fatigue and secondary trauma.

Purpose: To help clinical supervisors recognize and address secondary trauma and compassion fatigue in themselves and their supervisees.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will: 

1. Identify the ethical implications of secondary trauma and compassion fatigue
2. Recognize and address signs of secondary trauma and compassion fatigue
3. Discuss the roles and expectations of helping professionals and the part they play in putting clinicians at risk
4. Identify tools that supervisors can use to help supervisees prevent and recover from compassion fatigue and secondary trauma.

About the Trainer:

Michelle Risser. LISW-S works in private practice in the Columbus, Ohio area and is a certified EMDR Therapist. Her clinical focus areas are maternal mental health, birth trauma, and EMDR. Michelle has a passion for supporting other clinicians through chronic stress and burnout prevention. She is a writer, speaker and educator on topics related to mental health, chronic stress, burnout and self-care.
