It is important as individuals learn to be therapists to “read the room” and be aware that their own transference and countertransference occurs as a natural part of the therapeutic process. This course will help Supervisees and Residents cultivate awareness of transference and countertransference. The course will focus on the definition, identification and process of transference and countertransference. Strategies to identify and manage transference and countertransference will be discussed and participants will learn ways to manage these during and after sessions.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify transference and countertransference in the therapeutic process.
2. Become familiar with clinical situations where transference and countertransference may occur.
3. Discuss issues with failing to see and address transference and countertransference in the therapeutic process.
4. Develop ways to counteract transference and countertransference using boundaries, mindfulness, and supervision.
About the Trainer:
Lisa Duez, LCSW, MPA, CSAC, ACS, has been a clinical supervisor for over 10 years. She is the owner of Turning Point Counseling and Consulting, a trauma informed group practice in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Lisa is an EMDRIA certified clinician and approved consultant, and an Assistant Professor at Tidewater Community College.
