It is important as individuals learn to be therapists to “read the room” and be aware that their own transference and countertransference occurs as a natural part of the therapeutic process. This course will help Supervisees and Residents cultivate awareness of transference and countertransference. Strategies to identify and manage transference and countertransference will be discussed and participants will learn ways to manage these during and after sessions.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify transference and countertransference in the therapeutic process.
2. Become familiar with clinical situations where transference and countertransference may occur.
3. Discuss issues with failing to see and address transference and countertransference in the therapeutic process.
4. Develop ways to counteract transference and countertransference using boundaries, mindfulness, and supervision.
